Who I am

My name’s Jess Feder! And Feder Than You Productions is my LLC for all film services I provide.

What I do

One of the things I quickly realized is that setting up a business to streamline freelance income is a pain. There’s a thousand steps that no one has time for or wants to do. But paying a CPA can be expensive. So instead, I provide the option to split the difference. Pay half of what you would to a licensed CPA, and get all the work done for you by a fellow freelancer!

Why you need an LLC

If you’ve worked in Film for more than a month, you probably have more than one employer and have possibly worked in more than one state. If you’ve been in it for a while, you fondly remember the days when your number of employers stayed in the single digits. Having the right kind of LLC helps you streamline all that income, pay yourself out regularly, and simplify your personal taxes.

It also helps things like rental applications, mortgages, and car financing, as you can turn your sporadic earnings into consistent income from one source.

Additionally, it allows you to write off business expenses like gear, travel, or even-pause for dramatic effect- hiring someone to spin up your LLC!

The right kind of LLC

In the film world, this can be one of two types depending on whether you are starting a business for you (individual) or your movie.

Movies require a standard Single Entity LLC, no special elections.

Freelancers, however, will want to create an LLC with S-Corp elections. Electing to be taxed as an S-Corp both allows you those business write-offs mentioned above AND allows you to save money on the employer side of State Unemployment Insurance and State Withholding taxes. (Brochure on the benefits of an S-Corp election included FREE in either the Premium or Elite Package)
